The quest to lower home energy costs can be quite elusive, especially nowadays when everything gets to be operated using electricity. But there are ways to save on power consumption for every room in the house. Builders and Contractors

British Gas came up with tips on how to lower consumption in the bedroom. The bedroom after all uses up a lot of energy to either warm the body during the winter, or cool it during the summer, making things more comfortable. “During winter nights, the last thing we want is to be cold in bed. This doesn’t have to mean cranking the heating up and leaving it on throughout the night. Warm your bedroom shortly before you plan to go to sleep before turning down the thermostat to avoid wasting energy overnight. Use the timer built into your system to make sure that the room’s warm enough, just when you want it to be.”

“If there are gaps around your bedroom windows, your money is slipping away along with the wasted energy. Older windows are especially likely to have gaps in caulk or weatherstripping, letting cold breezes creep in during the winter, and cooled air leak out during the summer. Check your windows annually, and re-caulk if necessary to seal any leaks.”

Family Handyman meanwhile advised its readers to turn off electrical vampires each time because they cost electricity too even when they are not in use. “Seventy-five percent of the electrical use by home electronics occurs when they’re turned off, according to the Department of Energy. These “energy vampires” suck electricity all day long—costing you an extra $100 each year. So if you’d like to keep that Ben Franklin in your wallet, unplug your electronics or plug them into a power strip, then turn off the strip. Don’t worry about losing the settings on new computers and TVs. They have a memory chip that resets everything when you power back up.”
